Like the Price of Gas

The price of fresh frogs keeps climbing year after year. Where are our strategic frog reserves?!

Went to George's to hang and eat chili and watch the big game on Sunday after a very low-key weekend at home. Everything was going well until, while washing a 7-inch Santoku knife I hacked into my index finger very deeply. There was blood. I think I swore a time or two (I know, shocking). Damian accompanied me to the drugstore to get a splint and first aid supplies, which I managed to leave at George's last night.. D'oh! My real doctor friends say I'll live and all is well. I do hope that pesky numbness goes away though.
In other news, the icy winter weather has settled into NYC. It sucks to walk 15 blocks in 8 degree weather! All the Con-Ed stacks were working today as well, making steam and electricity. Wish some of it got to my apartment.

Damn it's difficult to type.
Christmas greetings to all! I have given up on myself when it comes to Christmas cards. I purchased them the last two years, partially wrote personal messages, addressed envelopes, and then they sat there - never mailed. Half-done. Both years. This year I accepted that it's a futile attempt and didn't even try. I appreciate receiving them, it's just beyond my capabilities at this point to return the favor at this point it seems.
Christmas in DC has been fantastic. Global warming has allowed me to sit outside and have lunch and coffee one day last week. Unbelievable but fun. I've been celebrating this year with party after party after party. Thanks to Rich and Nick, Rob and Pat, and Bob for hosting three parties filled with warm people, delicious food and bear-tastic times. Truly a Christmas for the record books. I have brunched, lunched, coffeed, dinnered and drank more than my fill since I got here. The pants are getting tight, so it's time for cardio.
A month ago or so, Tom and I had dinner at a sushi place called Lan, where we sampled this delicious appetizer. Mar-vel-ous! I think scallops must be my favorite seafood. That's mostly because they taste even better when wrapped in bacon. Then again, don't most things?
Back in Iowa City, and The Vine has treated us well. $2.75 for a Stein of beer (32 oz.), and $5 for a dozen wings. Then chicken fried steak. Then pork tenderloin. Then more "light" beer. Then, remarkably, Boone's Farm! I'm ready for some Football!!!

One other famous historical spot at Coney Island is Nathan's Hot Dogs*. So greasy, and extra yummy with chili and cheese and a big lemonade. My blood cheese levels were spiking after this meal. I love eating from the congealed group.
* I think I still prefer Hebrew National to Nathan's. After all, they answer to a higher power.

Grad School has begun, and the first week has completely lulled me into a false sense of security. I've been wined and dined and caffeinated and given lavish gifts. It's kinda fantastic. Last night we were treated to a wondeful dinner at a place downtown called Public. You can check out the menu online, it's quite tantalizing. It's not every day that I have an opportunity to eat kangaroo or Tazmanian sea trout, and I feasted heavily. The 'roo was yummy - more flavor than beef, slightly different from lamb, and not nearly as gamey as venison. I'd have it again. The sea trout looked, felt, and tasted a lot like salmon, and I was fairly tipsy when they brought it out. A few too many Mango Pineapple Mojitos, perhaps.
