Winter Wandering in NYC

BigLugBartenders.jpgLast weekend Tom joined me on a low-key weekend of eating, drinking, and wandering. Friday we had Upper East Side sushi, followed by Lower East Side drinks with George and Matt at Big Lug, where we were served drinks by the two handsome fellas pictured here.

Saturday involved brunch with Mr. and Mr. -ilicious Morningside Heights at Toast. Yay Toast! Then downtown for a wander through SoHo and the Apple Store, followed by some light shopping on Broadway. Unfortunately that was a Bust, but we headed over to Tom & Jerry's for a drink before dinner at Cafe Habana.

While at dinner, crammed between two other tables-for-two, I managed to touch my eye with hot-sauce on my finger. The flames! Inside of my eye! It buuuurns!!! Miraculously, the girl sitting next to me conjured a bottle of saline solution from her purse and I shamelessly hosed myself down mid-restaurant. Whatcha gonna do when you're trapped at a table? She saved me, and I should have bought her dinner, but I'm poor so a thank-you would have to suffice. Then off to hang with the peeps at Nowhere for Double-Headed Disco, followed by bar hopping around neighborhood.

Sunday, Tom and I met Ed for brunch, then joined the Farmboyz at the Brooklyn Transit Museum. Tom headed back to DC in the afternoon, Ed disappeared, and I strolled Brooklyn Heights with the Farmboyz, had dinner at 5 Front in DUMBO (fantastic, go there!). Afterward I re-met all my peeps at the Dugout for a couple of drinks, and was home fairly early.

One more week of lab rotation..... then back to class.

Feeling better

Life goes on, and despite a nagging cough I feel much better that last week this time. I put up the photos from my winter ski trip to Utah.

In other news, I keep smelling the scent of freshly sharpened pencils, yet no one in this room is doing any such thing. The air vents in this building are odd.

Spongeworthy?

TodaySponge.jpgToday I rejoin the ranks of the living, after spending the last 4 days in bed with the worst cold I can remember (since childhood anyway). Wednesday morning I got up with a tickle in the back of my throat, and by 5 PM I was running a fever of 102 °F and had alternating shivers/sweats. Friday I strongarmed my way into a doctors office and got some heavy duty meds, including the good cough syrup with codeine. Really, it's the only stuff that works. NyQuill is so tamed down these days. I spent the weekend watching DVDs from Netflix (Animaniacs, Pinky & The Brain, and In Living Color) along with as much Austrialian Open as ESPN would show me. I did finally venture out and join a couple buddies for the 4th quarter of last night's Colts v. Pats game. What a finish!

In other news, while waiting for my prescriptions at the drug store I was surprised to see these sponges are back on the market. How knew sponges had an interesting history.

Body & Soul!

BodySoulProducer.jpg

This week has been kinda rough for me. New lab rotation has started, plus leftover problem sets, plus comedown from break, plus baby mama drama. Okay, well maybe not that last one, but you get the picture. Luckily, Joe had an extra ticket to what he ensured me would be a truly great evening out in NYC. I accepted. Off to the west side to aggregate before we gyrate at la casita del Farmboyz. A number of Belgian beers and/or Manhattans were consumed. En route we made an unscheduled stop at Lincoln Center for a quick photo before jumping in a cab. Aaron was experimenting with a new persona for the evening, but I don't think it worked out very well for him.

Bit of a line to get in and check coats, but we were on the dance floor by 8 PM. I've not seen a more interesting mix of people to date. Funky hipsters, tourists, Brits, Aussies, bears, saucy latin ladies, saucy black dreadlock queens, and wacky Asians all mixed together in a feel-good party vibe I've not experienced before in NYC. The shining star in a terrific night was the hour-long James Brown tribute set. To quote Joe:

We got up offa that thing,
we were sex machines,
we were black,
we were proud.

I'll add to to that: We passed the peas. And the collard greens. Good God! Did I mention that most of the night was mixed live from the records? At certain points the DJs would drop the music and the crowd would just shout back the lyrics. It kicked quite a lot of ass. Just about the only thing that didn't kick ass was the fact that I was a moron and didn't go to the ATM at the bodega outside the club because I didn't want to spend the $2 fee -- until I realized that the ATMs inside the club (Pacha) charge an outrageous $8 fee. Must remember to plan ahead and get cash. Always.

And now I have to learn to write Perl scrips. Eeep!

Oh yeah, of course there are pictures!!!

Bones - The Killers

MormonJesus.jpg

And on the cold, wet dirt I cry.

Don’t you wanna come with me?
Don’t you wanna feel my bones on your bones?
It’s only natural

Don’t you wanna swim with me?
Don’t you wanna feel my skin on your skin?
It’s only natural

I am a sucker for a catchy horn lick and multiplied background vocals. I want to sing this song at Karaoke if anyone knows of a joint that has it.

More Pictures

DoraJeffSpongebob.jpg
I'm dealing with a bit of backlog of photos to post. Here are some photos from the last Blowoff in December. I flew there on the US Airways shuttle, which is the easiest way to get to DC from NYC. As long as the weather holds, that is. Not nearly as classy or fun as the train, but you can't beat $120 round trip from LGA to DCA. And since I'm a cheap-ass, the F train to Q33 bus route means I can get there in under an hour. Can't wait until they finish the AirTrain to LGA.

He'll Survive

JoshCookie.jpgRest assured, the nurse at ski patrol fixed him right up.

The cookie is from me.

Mountain: 1, Josh: 0

BloodyJoshFace.jpgBack in NYC after a great ski trip with Josh, BC, and Lisa. Poor Josh had a fight with a snow making machine - and lost. Yes, we took him to ski patrol and his eye swelled shut but he'll be just fine. No stitches, no concussion. But check out that glob of blood/snot/snow in his beard. Classy!

I made it out of Utah with only a bruise on my butt. In other news: red-eye flights suck, but not quite as bad as flying standby on a companion fare. I will only be using US Airways and Delta for short-hop flights from now on. And note to all: the international Delta terminal at JFK is a construction disaster. Stay far far away.

Fresh Powder

JeffSnowBeard.jpgIt was cloudy this morning at 8 am. By 9:00 we were on the lift at Deer Valley and the flurries were starting to fall. At 10 it was coming down pretty good. By noon I looked like this. Thankfully the beard kept me warm while sliding down the mountain, in the back country, out of bounds (accidentally) and hiking out. By the afternoon we had at least 7 inches of fresh powder (maybe 8... who's counting) as we deftly avoided the aspens. Fabulous. Powdery. Deep. Transcendent. Snow.

And then I fell into a drift and collided with a hundred-year-old conifer. I made it out alive. In fact, I'm injury-free (knock on wood) thus far. We were all wiped out after skiing and then went back to the jacuzzi. In the snow. Yeah.

Then I did something I didn't even know I had wanted to do my whole life.

I had a snowball fight with my buddies - in a heated pool!

Now I need a few beers and some food to complete a nearly perfect day.

Beautiful Days

UtahAspens.jpg

The weather here in Park City has been gorgeous. Perfect temperature. Perfect skies. Not so perfect snow. Lots of rocks and twigs. I'm hoping the weather reports for some light snow tomorrow and Friday are correct. Cross your fingers for me.

In other news: Photos are up from various Christmas. Visit my gallery and pick your favorite album.

Skiing in the New Year

JeffSkiUtah.jpg

Tom and I rang in the New Year in New York City at a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Concert after a great show by Bob. The weekend was tremendous overall, with dinners out with lots of peeps, including George, Matt, and Ed. The list of people and places is too long to remember, but the photos will tell the tale. So many photos to sort, and so little time.

For now I'm in Utah, so that may have to wait. Skiing is great, the weather is beautiful. Snow could be a bit better but I'm hopefully we'll get some fresh powder on Thursday. C'mon snow!! Pictures to come, but for now I require a nap.
